Getting lost on our path in life is easy to do. There are so many directions in which we can go and so many forks in the road. If we are not seeking God while walking our path in life then we can easily end up on a path that takes us around where it is God would like us to go. God will direct our paths (Proverbs 3:6) in this life, but how can we determine the way? Jesus gave us the answer. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).
If we want God to direct our steps, then we have to turn to Jesus. In John 14:6 Jesus continues on to say that no one comes to the Father except through Him. God cannot direct our steps if we don’t know the way and that way is through Jesus. Accepting Jesus as our Savior and receiving salvation is our way to the Father, but this is only part of what God intended for us to have through His Son.
In John 8:32 Jesus told those who believed in Him, “if you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” The words that Jesus spoke weren’t just ordinary words, they were the direct commands of God (John 12:49). When we follow Jesus’ commands we are following the commands of our heavenly Father. Jesus is the Word that became flesh and walked among us full of grace and truth (John 1:14). When we follow Jesus’ words we come to know God in a more intimate and personal way. His desires become our desires and His truth becomes our truth. The grip that sin used to have on our lives will start loosening as we come to know Jesus. Eventually His truth will become our only reality. It doesn’t matter what the world says or what the circumstances look like, through Jesus we will know the truth and that truth is what will make us free.
In John 1:4 it says that in Jesus was life, and this life was the light of all mankind. The purpose of light is to shine in the darkness. When we walk in the ways of the world, we are walking in darkness (sin and death). Jesus said, “I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness” (John 12:46). When we follow Jesus’ example of living in love, joy, peace, and humility then we are living in the full life that Jesus died for us to have. We are living in the light that He provided for us to overcome the darkness. In John 8:12 Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Jesus is a our way to the heavenly Father, and He will direct us on a straight path as we follow Him. Jesus is the truth, and His truth becomes our reality as we abide in His Word. Jesus is life. As we follow Jesus we will have the light of life leading us through the darkness.
The Truth in Action: Is there anything that is stopping you from following Jesus’ commands today? Is there something that has a grip on your life that you can’t seem to overcome? Do you have something that you are hiding in the darkness that needs to be brought into the light? Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you anything that needs to change in your life and then ask Jesus to help you change your ways and to help you live in His truth. Allow Jesus to be your way, your truth, and your life today.
Meditate on Scripture: Romans 8:1-2 (ESV) – There is therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.
Further Study: In the Gospels we find God’s truths in the words spoken by Jesus. Choose one of the Gospels and study the commands God gave us through the words spoken by His Son. If you are not sure where to start, John 13:34 is a good place or Matthew 5-7.
