Confident In Who I Am

In Exodus 3:14 God declared His name to us.  In this verse He says, “I Am Who I Am.” God is the great I Am.  Unlike us, God needs no other qualifier, He is simply I Am. Before I had a relationship with Christ, if someone were to ask me who I was, I would have answered with what I could see physically: I am a wife, a mother, a daughter, a teacher, a good friend.  My identity was wrapped up in labels placed on me by the world, and that’s who I believed I was. Understanding Scripture has helped me to see who I am in Christ and this has helped me realize my true identity.

My identity comes from what the Word of God says about me.  I am who the Word of God says I am. I believe that I am one with the Lord in spirit (I Corinthians 6:17) and that I am a new creation in Christ (II Corinthians 5:17). I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus (II Corinthians 5:21).  I am a temple of the Holy Spirit whom I have received from God (I Corinthians 6:19). I am blessed: I am blessed coming in and blessed going out (Deuteronomy 28:6) and everything I put my hand to will prosper (Deuteronomy 28:8). I am blessed with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places (Ephesians 1:3).  I am a child of God, adopted into His family (Ephesians 1:5). I am an heir in Christ (Romans 8:17), and accepted in the Beloved (Ephesians 1:6).

I don’t always see myself as God sees me because the world and my fleshly emotions sometimes get in the way. However, I know that all I need to do to release my true identity is renew my mind to what the Word of God says about me.  Seeing myself as God sees me has taken some practice, and it is something that I have to purposefully work on each day. I know though, that as I continue to acknowledge every good thing which is in me in Christ Jesus (Philemon 1:6), eventually my flesh will fade away and my perfected spirit is all that I will see.  God’s Word tells me that I am loved, strong, beautiful, capable, and blessed. This is my true identity, this is who I was fearfully and wonderfully made to be (Psalm 139:14), and this has helped me to be a better wife, mother, daughter, teacher, and friend.

The world may be trying to place a label on who you are, but be confident that your identity does not have to be shaped by what the world tells you. God is the great I Am, and we can be confident in who we are in Him. As Jesus is, so also are we in this world (I John 4:17).

Take Action: What is the first thing that comes to your mind when asked: who are you?  If you can only answer what you see physically, then you need to renew your mind to what the Word of God says about you. Meditate on the scriptures above until they sink in as truths.

Meditate on Scripture: John 17:3 (ESV) – And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
